SA confirms its first four cases of Japanese encephalitis virus amid the national outbreak, with health authorities investigating whether a person with acute encephalitis had JEV.

South Australia has recorded four cases of Japanese encephalitis virus , with health authorities saying a person who died may also have had the mosquito-borne virus.

Three of the four confirmed JEV cases were acquired locally, and seven of the 10 people are still in hospital."We do have an effective vaccine, which is very reassuring," Dr Lease today said. He warned that while most people who contracted it would be asymptomatic, the virus could prove fatal and cause long-term neurological damage.

“As we head into the long weekend, and with Easter right around the corner, it's an incredibly timely reminder to take precautions against mosquito bites," he said.
