Japanese forces will train alongside US Marines in northern Australia in 2025, Defence Minister Richard Marles said during high-level talks hosted in Darwin on Sunday.
Defence Minister Richard Marles has hosted his US and Japanese counterparts in Darwin for trilateral discussions on increased military cooperation .
Mr Austin and Mr Marles sat down with their Japanese counterpart, Nakatani Gen, for a trilateral meeting focused on regional security, as all three nations grow increasingly anxious of a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan. About 2,000 US personnel deploy to northern Australia between April and October each year as part of Marine Rotational Force Darwin , under a 25-year agreement which was established in 2011.
