A Japanese man has paid a whopping AU$2.6 million for a giant bluefin tuna fish at a New Year's auction.

He attended Tokyo's Toyosu fish markets on January 1 and placed his bid, winning the 276 kilogram fish. The fish was caught off the coast of the Aomori region of northern Japan and Kimura was evidently pleased with his purchase.
