Jason Day won the PGA Tour Byron Nelson on Sunday, shooting a bogey-free 62 in the final round. It's the first Tour win in five years for the former world No. 1 golfer:
Eight years ago, Day won the PGA Championship. He was the No. 1 player in the world for the first time that year and stayed there for the entirety of 2016. Two years later he won the Wells Fargo Championship, his second PGA Tour win of that season. He was still only 31, a man in his prime and perhaps destined to carve out a legacy as one of the best of this era.
And yet since just about then, he’s just been Jason Day again. Top 20s throughout the fall series, and then four top-10s in designated events this year. Suddenly he’s 15th in the world, per DataGolf.com .KellenbergerYou have to at least consider him, probably somewhere in the second group of contenders. Like I said, Day has been playing consistently good golf for seven or eight months now. There’s a pattern of results here.
I’m not going to dismiss a 62 at all, but lots of guys went low Sunday . What Day did down the stretch — with a crowded leaderboard, which included Scottie Scheffler — was never let his eyes get too big. The birdies on 14 and 15 were a treat, but I loved the second shot on the par-3 17th, from the fringe and in a tricky spot where too much on the ball would roll it past and put bogey into play, but too little was going to have it at his feet.
