Spanish rider Javier Romo Oliver out-thought his major rivals and Tour Down Under favourites to claim a maiden professional victory on stage three into Uraidla.

Spanish rider Javier Romo Oliver stunned the pre-race favourites to claim a superb first professional victory on stage three of the Tour Down Under into Uraidla .

The British rider may have felt there was little point in overextending himself, but French rider of Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale, Geoffrey Bouchard, a one-time winner of the mountains classification at both the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, decided he would join the young Australian instead.At 147.5km with 3,236 metres of climbing, including the first ever ascents of Knotts Hill, a climb with an average gradient of 8.0 per cent and peaking out at 13.

"It's a really expensive day for us. It's 3,000m climbing in more or less four hours. It's a proper day on the bike. As the two breakaway riders established their lead, veteran Aussie Simon Clarke of Israel Premier Tech threw himself into the void ahead of the first intermediate sprint to eat up the final bonus second, just so that none of the other favourites would.Team UAE were controlling front of the peloton, with Jhonatan Narvaez and Jay Vine their twin options for stage and race honours.

The first ascent of Knotts Hill saw the peloton cut in half, with race leader Sam Welsford among the riders to be dropped.
