We chat with TheBlackening stars JayPharoah & MelvinGregg about blood, guts, and the comedy that comes out of deconstructing the horror genre:
The horror genre gets deconstructed to hilarious effect in The Blackening, a horror-themed comedy about a group of Black friends whose college reunion party turns into a nightmare. Well, a nightmare for them, but a delightfully subversive comic romp for viewers.
While promoting the release of The Blackening, Jay Pharoah and Melvin Gregg spoke to Screen Rant about their work on the film. They discussed how they got involved with the project, how Melvin's father had an aversion to seeing his son in bloody makeup, and how the character of King works on both comedic and dramatic levels because he comes from a real and believable place.
Jay Pharoah: You never know. You never know. It's a breakthrough comedy, man. It's a breakthrough horror/comedy. Nobody's ever done it before. It's different. It speaks to a lot of different flavors of black folks. That was attractive. Tim Story, of course. I've worked with Tim Story in Ride Along, and of course, he directed White Famous, so we had built up a rapport. And I had just done a movie with Sinqua. So I got the call about it, I read it, and said, okay, cool.
Jay Pharoah: I wanted to send some stuff, but I couldn't for contractual obligations, you know what I mean? On social media...Jay Pharoah: For, like, it was like, 30 minutes. For 30 minutes, I had something up, and then they got, they were like, "You've gotta take that down!" So... Yeah. Yeah, man!
