Entering the fourth week of the season, Beechcroft had yet to win a game or even play at home.
Both streaks were snapped Sept. 8 as the Cougars defeated visiting Bexley 21-0 to improve to 1-2, bringing a smile to the face of coach Humphrey Simmons.
Jovontice Shull scored on a 7-yard run with 11 minutes, 4 seconds left in the first half. Quarterback Aurelius Scott then hit Jayden Douglas with a 35-yard touchdown pass with 9:27 left before halftime. Douglas took the opening kickoff of the second half back 70 yards for the game’s final score. The senior also had an interception as a defensive back.
Bexley couldn’t find its way into the end zone. The Lions drove to the Beechcroft 20-yard line in the final minute, but the hurried pass of quarterback Jackson Frey sailed out of the end zone.
