The phrase “No regrets” was in the back of my mind when I cheekily squared up to the French leader.

Last Monday, TFF cracked an invite to the Elysee Palace to attend a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron to welcome visiting journalists for the Olympics. Beneath the sparkling chandeliers, as we waited for his grand arrival, I was one of 300 or so journos hoovering up the world-class. And here he is! With grand ceremony Macron makes his entrance with IOC President Thomas Bach, a few military types and the French.

Not only did he miss the cut with his 12 over after two rounds, but it fitted with the fact he finished in the top 30 in only one of his last five majors. Maybe there’ll be a miracle, but that loss was so against the zeitgeist of Australian women’s sport right now – where everything is boomtime and nothing is bigger than the team that knocked our socks off during last year’s World Cup – it felt less like the “wake-up call” Matilda skipper Steph Catley characterised it as afterwards, and more like “Good night, Irene.”In the meantime, at least there is the highly accomplished Australian women’s rugby sevens team to look forward to.
