There was certainly lots of good news in Hunt’s speech. The most significant was the Office of Budget Responsibility’s assessment that his measures, combined with falling global prices, mean that the UK “will not now enter a technical recession this year”. The power of political pilfering from your critics’ policies is undermined if the public feel that overall, this Government has been picking their pockets for years.
