Jess Hatzis says 90s style shapes her wardrobe and she avoids dressing like everyone else

Entrepreneur and author Jess Hatzis discusses her evolving, polished and embellished style, her 1980s and 90s influences, and her favourite labels, shoes, jewellery and wardrobe essentials.

Entrepreneur and author Jess Hatzis has opened up about her fashion choices, saying her childhood wardrobe was very much defined by the 1980s and 90s and that she does not like dressing like everybody else.

Jess Hatzis Evolving Polished Wardrobe

Hatzis describes her style as evolving, polished and embellished. The most recent addition to her wardrobe is a navy pinstripe diamante suit from On Parks, one of her favourite labels for interesting pieces. She also likes Sir for easy summer pieces and St. Agni for tailored classics. There is quite a bit of old Celine in her wardrobe, along with a big collection of items from obscure labels, because she does not like dressing like everybody else.

Why Jess Hatzis thinks fashion has gone downhill since the onset of ‘Instagram style’

Her favourite fashion era is any time pre-Instagram. She believes there has been a homogenisation of how people dress because everyone is consuming the same content. Hatzis takes a lot of inspiration from 90s icons such as Calista Flockhart and Sarah Jessica Parker, particularly their red carpet looks. Asked what she would wear for different occasions, she said on a first date she would choose Anine Bing leather pants with a fine knit and a heel.

On a plane, she opts for Assembly Label barrel-leg pants and a long-sleeve tee by Cos or Beare Park. For the red carpet, she would wear Schiaparelli or archival Thierry Mugler, adding that a girl can dream. The three essential items in her wardrobe are a white Uniqlo baby tee, a cashmere sweater and a big fluffy jacket.

She also has a large collection sourced from all over the world, including a huge cream coat and a bright blue jacket made of faux feathers. They are fun, she said, and while she looks ridiculous, she loves that she does not blend in. The shoes she wears most are a pair of blue suede clogs with an evil eye by Italian label Post&Co, and Toteme kitten-heel boots.

Her go-to jewellery is a big stack of rings, mixing fine, elegant pieces such as her black diamond engagement ring with chunky costume jewellery, including a ring with a big cobalt stone. She has pieces from Palazzo, Alighieri and Sarah & Sebastian. Reflecting on her past, Hatzis said she was obsessed with her pedal pushers and finds it funny that they have made a comeback, now as capri pants.

Jess Hatzis Fashion Mistakes Scarves

Her worst fashion mistake was wearing too much fake tan, which she said destroys even the most amazing outfit. She has always loved a scarf and used to wear them as a top, but it is too dangerous now with small kids pulling at her clothes, so she has converted to headscarves. They bring whimsy to an outfit and mean she does not have to do her hair.

She sleeps in silk Bond Street pyjamas, and it has to be a matching set. Feeling put together at the end of the day is calming to her. She would never wear anything made from polyester. Her wish list has far too many things on it, but at the top is a Róhe leather jacket.

On a typical working day, she is usually overdressed in a sculptural embellished pencil skirt with a fine knit and vintage brooches. It is her chance to wear her precious things without getting avocado smooshed on them. The weekends are more relaxed. She will wear her Nili Lotan Shon pants, a Kinga Csilla long-sleeve tee and thongs.

How Historical Attitudes Shape Language on Sex and ParentingHow Historical Attitudes Shape Language on Sex and ParentingThe excerpt contrasts Charles Darwin's conventional views on killing animals with changing attitudes toward sex education and parenting in Australia. It argues that accepted beliefs often persist because they are repeatedly reinforced, even when unsupported, and shows how explicit language about anatomy and sexuality has emerged over time through works such as Gertrude Buzzard Dunlop's 1928 guidebook.
