The Today show’s MeToo crisis has metastasized
Arguably more stunning than the rape allegation itself was Lauer’s full-scale counterattack. It came in the form of a defiant, 1,400-word open letter released by Lauer’s legal team to news outlets, in which Lauer paints his accuser—a former assistant to—as an opportunistic ex-paramour who became embittered after he spurned her. Lauer, in his telling, is the real victim, collateral damage of a nationwide cultural reckoning.
Further down Lauer seeks to undermine Nevils’s credibility in a series of points: “She says I was the one pursuing the relationship, yet once it was over, she was the one calling me asking to rekindle it”; “She said she just wanted NBC to ‘do the right thing,’ yet she sought a monetary payment, and two years after I was fired, she is stepping forward to do more damage”; and so on.
“This is what I blame myself most for,” she tells Farrow. “It was completely transactional. It was not a relationship.” PerIt’s hard to imagine Lauer’s defense scoring him many points in the court of public opinion. In asummed up what many women—and men for that matter—are undoubtedly thinking about Lauer’s letter right now: “It concludes with the most backward powerful-man-as-real-victim bullshit I have yet read, and I have read a ton of that bullshit.
