The popular holiday destination is facing a 'state of alert' due to the risk of wildfires which are threatening to sweep across the region as well as toxic volcanic gases on one island
UK holidaymakers planning to soak up the sun in the Canary Islands have been warned of a heightened risk of wildfires due to soaring temperatures, and an increase in toxic volcanic gases on one island. The local authorities have declared a "state of alert for fires" as the wildfire threat intensifies, with "all the western islands" at risk.
Regarding the wildfire threat, the Canary Islands Government's Department of Security and Emergencies shared safety measures on X, formerly known as Twitter. The message read: "Remember risk alert in Western Islands and Gran Canaria." Meanwhile, Spain's meteorological agency Aemet has issued yellow warnings due to the high temperatures expected to scorch Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, and La Gomera.
