Jewish community ‘split’ in Wentworth as Spender lays claim to seat’s values | michaelkoziol
A surprising proportion of Jewish voters are backing Allegra Spender in Wentworth, says Australian Jewish Association president David Adler, who gave the independent candidate his tick of approval amid criticism of the broader Climate 200 movement.
The conservative Dr Adler said Jewish voters in Wentworth were divided as much as the wider electorate. Liberal MP and former ambassador to Israel Dave Sharma holds the seat by a margin of just 1.3 per cent. Dr Adler attended Ms Spender’s election campaign launch at the InterContinental Hotel in Double Bay on Thursday night, which was hosted by former ABC presenter Emma Alberici.
A Liberal source familiar with the party’s internal polling said they were confident Mr Sharma’s primary vote was “holding up well”. The teal crowd booed and hissed when Alberici introduced media executive David Haslingden by mentioning he used to run Rupert Murdoch’s television stations.
