Cliftonville boss wants discussions as teams chase success in Europe and the financial rewards which currently dwarf the domestic game
Cliftonville boss Jim Magilton says he would back discussions on how to best equip teams for European competition after a dismal campaign for Irish League clubs.
Magilton, though, feels Northern Irish clubs will always be at a disadvantage when they come up against teams who are halfway through their season come the opening rounds of European competition. The former Northern Ireland international has first hand experience of success on the continent as part of Shamrock Rovers' coaching panel when they reached the group stages of the Europa League back in 2011.
"We had a great season last year and it's always about trying to do better, but we failed miserably in Europe in my opinion because we couldn't compete with the clubs who are currently in the middle of their own domestic season...It was hugely disappointing," said Magilton. "I've seen it on both sides when I had the opportunity to work with Michael at Shamrock Rovers. They were a quality group of players but fitness played a huge part in qualification.
