Jim's Mowing founder James Penman has attributed Australia's declining fertility rate to excessive dopamine exposure from social media, junk food, alcohol, pornography and sex, arguing that this reduces sensitivity to family, work, faith and community. Researcher Liz Allen disputes the claim, saying Australians are not avoiding children simply because they are hedonistic or selfish. Penman is also standing for the Libertarian Party in the upcoming Victorian election.

It becomes adjusted to this surge of dopamine and it becomes less sensitive,” Penman said.

“Ordinary things of life like family, children, work, faith, community become less and less appealing. ”Australia’s fertility rate has fallen to just under one-and-a-half children per woman, well below the replacement rate of 2.1.

“Let’s be clear here. Australians are not foregoing children because they are hedonistic and selfish,” Dr Liz Allen from the Australian National University said. Penman, a father of 10, is a candidate at next month’s Victorian election, running for the Libertarian Party, formerly the Liberal Democrats.
