Takes home Bill Muncey Cup with victory on East Mission Bay
Jimmy Shane won the Bill Muncey Cup championship race in the sponsoring Miss HomeStreet boat Sunday to complete a sweep of the Unlimited Hydroplane races on East Mission Bay.
In addition to winning the title race, the 36-year-old Texan won all four of his preliminary races in addition to posting the fastest qualifying run Friday at 165.636 mph — the fastest qualifying lap in San Diego since fuel restrictions were imposed on the Lycoming T-55 turbine engines 26 years ago. The weekend also resulted in Shane winning a seventh driver’s championship and HomeStreet winning the boat title for the 11th time in the last 14 years.In the title race, Shane crossed the start line behind defending race champion J. Michael Kelly and Jeff Bernard , but caught the leaders along the straight along Fiesta Island at the end of the first lap and pulled away with an average speed of 155.010 mph.
After an early duel with Bernard, Shane easily won the second prelim with Nilsen second and Kelly and Bernard slowed by engine troubles.
