JK Rowling has hailed an SNP MSP who resigned from the Scottish Government over its controversial gender recognition reforms as a "heroine".

Rowling, a long-standing critic of the gender recognition reform act , last night tweeted a message of support for Regan. "I have concluded that my conscience will not allow me to vote with the government at the stage one of the Bill." Responding to Regan's letter last week, Nicola Sturgeon wrote: "As you are aware, a key requirement of the Ministerial Code is collective responsibility - a principle essential to effective governance, and which applies across all matters of government policy irrespective of the issue.

The GRA Bill aims to speed up the time it takes to obtain a gender recognition certificate and lowers the age for obtaining one from 18 to 16. The vote was overwhelmingly carried following widespread support from SNP, Green, Lib Dem and Labour MSPs. Two Tories also backed the Bill.
