The $1.5 billion JobTrainer program boost will be welcome news to year 12 students who are staring down the barrel of rising unemployment figures.

Cornerstone Group senior director James Cullen said today’s JobTrainer announcement by the Morrison government would aid training for up to 340,000 job seekers and school leavers.

“One of the lost cohorts … is the poor year 12’s and what they’ve got ahead of them with exams, with schoolies,” Mr Cullen said. "They’d normally be looking at having perhaps a gap year, travelling overseas, career pathways, TAFE, university. “There’s lots of uncertainty on that group right now so today's announcement from the government, I think, will be welcome support for that group in particular.
