Hong Kong-based jockey Andrea Atzeni dedicates his win in the Sydney Cup to his late friend Stefano Cherchi, who passed away after a race fall in Canberra. Atzeni sat with Cherchi for 16 hours in the hospital and attended his memorial service.
A simple point to the sky passing the winning post in the Sydney Cup aboard Circle Of Fire at Randwick on Saturday showed that this victory meant more than any other to Hong Kong -based jockey Andrea Atzeni.
When Atzeni returned and weighed in he went straight to Cherchi’s dad, Sebastian, and hugged him in emotional scenes.“It has been a tough time for family and it is amazing to see them here,” Atzeni said.“It wouldn’t have been an easy decision for them to come racing today. It shows how tough they and and it shows that unfortunately Stefano left us doing what he wanted to do and what he loved doing.
It was special ride from Mark Zahra on Autumn Angel. He settled back second last before looking to find the back of the odds-on favourite Orchestral from the 700m and then biding his time up the rise.“I got on to Orchestral’s back and I knew I could get out when I wanted because I was going so well, but I just had to wait until the horse to my outside fell away,” Zahra said. “Once I got outside heels, I knew she would let down because she gave me a real good feel last week.
“I thought he wouldn’t have been out of place in the Doncaster – that’s how much confidence I have in this horse,” Niceforo said. “I’m pretty confident he would have been in the finish in it after watching it.Zac Lloyd had to bide his time in the straight and wait for the run to come back to the inside. When it did, Territory Express was electric in scoring by a length from Strait Acer , with Shadows Of Love a long neck back in third.
The Exceed And Excel filly was fourth in the Blue Diamond and then unlucky finishing midfield in Lady Of Camelot’s Golden Slipper, but with a better run Eneeza found her way to the winner’s stall with a great steer from Damian Lane. “She ran amazing. Just the weight difference got us beaten by a top-class filly,” Lady Of Camelot’s jockey Blake Shinn said.Michael Freedman continued his outstanding autumn carnival when Panic took out the South Pacific Classic at Randwick.
