Photograph: Seven NewsPhotograph: Seven NewsA Western Australian jockey has been given a six-week suspension for his role in a collision that cost the life of racehorse Chili is Hot at the Perth Cup on Sunday.Chili Is Hot, a five-year-old mare, was euthanised on the track at Ascot racecourse after a collision with another horse roughly 200 metres into the race in front of about 10,000 spectators.
The incident led to the Perth Cup being called off for the first time in its 136-year history. The race will be rerun on 14 January. An RSPCA WA spokesperson said “the fatality further highlights the need for changes to the thoroughbred racing industry”.
