Two jockeys, Blake Spriggs and Beany Panya, were critically injured after a fall during a race meeting at Moruya on Friday. The incident occurred as the field rounded the home turn in the sixth race, dislodging both riders from their mounts. Spriggs and Panya sustained serious injuries, with Spriggs being placed in an induced coma in critical but stable condition. He suffered chest and abdominal injuries requiring surgery, along with fractures to his ribs and clavicle.

A neurosurgeon was still to assess him. Panya, on the other hand, fractured her T6 and T7 vertebrae and sustained a head injury. Although she was initially listed in a serious but stable condition at Moruya Hospital, she was later transported to Canberra Hospital. Panya regained consciousness late on Friday night, recognizing her partner and fellow jockey Robyn Freeman. While she doesn't remember the fall, she engaged in conversations and inquired about the incident. Racing NSW reported that Panya's thoracic spine fracture may necessitate surgery, but a final decision awaited the neurosurgeon's advice. Her head injury, however, did not require immediate surgery. She remained in intensive care under close observation. Racing NSW expressed concern for both jockeys, stating that Spriggs would also continue to be closely monitored over the next 24 hours. The remaining two races were abandoned following the fall to allow for the treatment of the injured riders. Their mounts, Blesstas and The Boomerang, reportedly escaped injury
