Jody Conradt: The impact of Title IX is alive and well for today’s athletes

Ty Russell, STR / AP

A 38-year women’s college basketball coaching career closed in March 2007, but The University of Texas has allowed me to remain active as a special assistant in administration to our energetic and passionate VP and athletics director Chris Del Conte. He has two daughters in college. Chris and his wonderful spouse, Dr. Robin Ward, faculty member at Rice University, daily share the impact higher education has on young women. This was not the case for many women prior to 1972.

The University of Texas declared an Intercollegiate Athletics Department for Women in 1973 and formalized “varsity” sports for the 1974-75 academic year. Texas actually was behind somewhat compared to some smaller in-state schools and even at UT System component where I was employed . I came to Texas in 1976 to coach volleyball AND basketball.

As coaches and administrators, we are judged by wins and losses. As individuals, we gauge our success by the depth of ongoing, sustained relationships with the student-athletes. When a young person remains in touch with you long after their last season of eligibility or graduation, that is the most meaningful measurable result.
