Wrangling over the US speakership is delaying plans to finalise Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s program for his trip to America, which includes lobbying for AUKUS.
Wrangling over the US speakership is hampering Anthony Albanese from locking in meetings with key congressional leaders in Washington next week, to lobby them over AUKUS-related legislation as well as deliver a potential joint address to Congress.
As well as bilateral ties, Mr Albanese and Mr Biden will speak about the turmoil in the Middle East following terror group Hamas’ attack on Israel, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and tensions in the Indo-Pacific with China., echoing his earlier call for an end to America’s long-running efforts to prosecute him.
But the ongoing Republican civil war over appointing a House of Representatives speaker has left other parts of Mr Albanese’s program in flux. The speakership has been vacant since October 3, when Kevin McCarthy was ousted by right-wing members of his party room in a historic move.
The lack of a speaker means Mr Albanese cannot be formally invited to address a joint sitting of Congress. One possible workaround is he addresses only senators instead.
