The president said it is a 'good day for democracy, and a good day for America' after better-than-expected results for the Democrats - while Donald Trump is furious with the underperformance of his acolytes
As the final results trickle in from Tuesday’s elections, Senate races in Arizona and Nevada are still too close to call.
The outcome would set the stakes high for next month’s run-off election, with Democrats pinning their hopes on a victory that will take the chamber to 50-50. As Democrats hold the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris is able to break ties in the upper house. Despite the challenges ahead, Joe Biden has said he is “ready to compromise” and work with Republicans as they look set to claim control of the House of Representatives.
Mr Biden added: “While the press and the pundits were predicting a giant red wave, it didn’t happen. And I know you were somewhat miffed by my obessive optimism, but I felt good during the whole process. I felt we were going to do fine. Some good Democrats didn’t win, but Democrats had a strong night, and we lost fewer seats in the House of Representatives than any Democratic presidents first midterm election in the last 40 years.
However, he vowed to veto “any attempt to pass a national ban on abortion” or any attempt to gut social security.
