It does feel hypocritical for Biden to talk about how important his grandchildren are and leave one of them out.
Joe Biden has said that “family is life’s greatest blessing and responsibility.” Somewhere in Arkansas, a 4-year-old girl admires her grandfather, a man who won’t acknowledge her existence. And that’s sad, particularly since he’s the President of the United States.
That’s a personal matter, certainly, and Hunter Biden is a private citizen. If her grandfather were just some random Joe off the street, we obviously wouldn’t be writing about this at all. The only reason it comes up is because of how Joe Biden the President has presented himself: He espouses this idea of the centrality of family.
Yet the president has not met or publicly mentioned his other grandchild, even as he’s spoken so movingly about the pain of family absence and loss, and what it feels like “seeing that empty chair at the kitchen table.” Biden also said his father had “taught me that, above all, family is the beginning, middle and end — a lesson I have passed down to my children and grandchildren.” And that “family is life’s greatest blessing and responsibility.”
