History, though, had other plans.of Ukraine last week has wrought widespread devastation in that country, shattered peace on the European continent, and, in America, reset Biden’s presidency. He’ll have a lot to say Tuesday evening about the pandemic, the economy, and climate change—issues that have not diminished in importance since Putin launched his attack.
“There’s always national security in every State of the Union speech, but every State of the Union speech also reflects a moment of time,” White House Press SecretaryMonday. “And so the president will lay out the efforts we are taking, he has taken, he has led on to rally the world to stand up for democracy and against Russian aggression.”
The United States is not at war in Europe. Biden has pledged support for Ukraine, but made clear that American forces would not be deployed for fighting missions there. Still, over the last week, his has started to feel like something of a wartime presidency: Not only is an ally under siege, but Putin has responded to international condemnation with a series of reckless nuclear threats.
