US presidents have visited war zones before in Iraq and Afghanistan - but those were very different. They were US wars and visits to areas controlled by the US military, and they didn't risk the wrath of a country like Russia, writes Annelise Nielsen.
When President Joe Biden came into office his supporters made the claim time and time again:"the adults are back in charge".
But the decision for President Joe Biden to fly into an active war zone today is a remarkable show of courage and conviction that will mark a re-defining moment in the US presence on the world stage. George W Bush and Barack Obama both visited Iraq and Afghanistan. Donald Trump also visited Bagram Airfield in 2019.Those were US wars and visits to areas controlled by the US military. They also didn't involve antagonising one of America's largest and most powerful adversaries.
The Biden Administration kept the details and planning of this visit under wraps for months, and the call to visit Ukraine on Monday was only made three days before. There are legitimate questions being asked of the money being spent on the war. With any spend of money that large and in that part of the world, corruption is an obvious risk and there should be high levels of transparency around where the money is going.
