The Last of Us Part 2's new trailer is here, just shown off during Sony's State of Play.

, barely twenty minutes long and a lot of padding for really only one major reveal, a new trailer forand its release date, February 21, 2020, which should make it the last major PlayStation release before the next console generation arrives that fall.

I was actually a little surprised that this trailer felt a little…spoilery to me, though the defining event that is strongly hinted at is probably the impetus for the entire story, so I supposed they had to addressI previously had a theory that Joel had been killed and his appearance in past spots was all in Ellie’s head as she tries to get revenge for him. But this trailer seems to lay out a pretty clear alternative scenario.

Everyone will remember Ellie sharing a kiss with another girl in the original debut trailer for the game, and that same girl is featured at the start . They and others in this encampment go out on some sort of mission and…things do not go well.what happens, but the very, very strong implication is that Ellie’s crush is killed right in front of her by an enemy group and Ellie is assaulted in some way.

It seems that he and Ellie have become possibly estranged for some reason, judging by her reaction to him showing up, and I’m sure we’ll dive more into that in the game itself. The game looks like more, only you’re probably playing as Ellie most of the time this go-round instead of Joel. Even though he shows up in the trailer, there’s no footage of gameplay with him.

I’m sure the game will be excellent, and even if my Ghost Joel theory was wrong, I’m excited to see Ellie dismantle this group piece by piece. Only five months to wait now.
