Votto may have played his last game as a Red on Sunday, but there are several scenarios under which he could return in 2024.
11 minutes on a day that all games are supposed to begin at the same time — Votto’s day ended in the most unceremonious way possible. So, was Miles Mikolas’ first-inning strikeout of Votto his last at-bat as either a Red or as a big-league player?
He received a standing ovation several times in the Reds’ home finale on Sept. 24, singling in his last at-bat there. He also spoke to the crowd following the game, thanking them for the recognition. He was even given a nice ovation when introduced for his at-bat on Sunday, when he came to the plate in the first inning, batting in the third spot in the team’s order for the first time this season.
In terms of OPS+, Votto is ahead of the likes of Hall of Famers Eddie Mathews , Mike Piazza , Chipper Jones , David Ortiz , Larry Walker , Vladimir Guerrero , Ken Griffey Jr. and George Brett , among many others. He’s also comparable to his contemporaries, including Albert Pujols , Rookie Christian Encarnacion-Strand looks as if he could be the first baseman of the future. In 63 games this season , Encarnacion-Strand hit .270/.328/.477 with 13 home runs in 241 plate appearances.. Marte appeared in just 35 games, but lived up to his prospect hype — and maybe even exceeded it — in his time in the big leagues. The 21-year-old hit .316/.366/.456 with three homers and finished the season on a 16-game hitting streak, including a double in his final at-bat.
While Votto will get money from the Reds regardless, the question is if he has anywhere near as much value to any other team as he does to the Reds.
