John Barilaro appointed to US trade role over shortlisted applicant Kimberley Cole, documents show | LucyCormack
An award-winning female global executive was shortlisted for the role of US trade commissioner in March, before former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro was controversially appointed to the position.
“I’d like to clarify that we don’t currently have a preferred candidate for the [US] role,” Brown wrote. “And the Minister is meeting Kimberley in her capacity as shortlisted candidate only”.Brown was the first witness to front a parliamentary inquiry into Barilaro’s now-defunct appointment last week. She did not give evidence about Cole or that she was shortlisted before the position was finalised.
Sharpe said more information was needed to tell the story, but claimed the documents showed “a process determined to get a particular outcome”.Janie Barrett A recently prepared “Q and A” prepared by Investment NSW outlining Barilaro’s appointment describes his US credentials as having “a proven ability to build networks, negotiate and win deals in both politics and his former life as a businessman”.
