Four candidates were shortlisted and interviewed for the $500,000-a-year role before it was handed to former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro, who created the taxpayer funded job when he was trade minister.
Mr Barilaro, who resigned from parliament in October last year, was appointed to the $500,000-a-year job in New York after a"highly competitive and rigorous global talent search", the NSW government said in a statement on Friday.
