England international John Bateman has secured a two-year deal with the North Queensland Cowboys, leaving Wests Tigers after an uncertain period.
John Bateman will join North Queensland after being granted an early release from his Wests Tigers contract.Wests Tigers have confirmed England international John Bateman will leave the club to join North Queensland on a two-year deal. Bateman's future at Wests Tigers had been clouded but the 31-year-old's immediate move to the Cowboys was announced on Wednesday via a brief statement.
'On behalf of everyone at the club I want to thank John and wish him all the very best with his future,' Wests Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson said in a statement.Meanwhile, Cowboys officials said they were delighted to secure Bateman for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. 'We have been in the market for an experienced forward with the ability to play either in the middle or on an edge,' Cowboys general manager of football Micheal Luck said in a statement. 'John bases his game around defensive intent and willingness to compete in every situation, a couple of areas we've made no secret we want to improve significantly on in 2025. 'Along with what he does on the field, we also believe he will be a valuable mentor for our younger forwards in Heilum Luki, Jeremiah Nanai and Griffin Neame.'He debuted in the NRL with Canberra in 2019, the same year the Raiders reached the grand final. He was named the Dally M Second Rower of the Year in his debut season but left the Raiders at the end of 2020 to return to Wigan in the Super League
