Democrat incumbent John Bel Edwards defeated his Republican challenger despite three Trump rallies in the Bayou State.

The results were close all night, with Rispone, a Republican businessman from Baton Rouge, leading most of the night. But as the bigger metropolitan areas of Baton Rouge, Shreveport and New Orleans began sending in counted ballots, Edwards won with about a 30,000-vote cushion when it was called. The Trump rally on Thursday this week in Bossier City is an area that typically votes Democrat. Though Bossier Parish voted 66 percent for Rispone, the neighboring parishes of Caddo , Bienville, Red River and Natchitoches all went the way of Edwards.
"Louisiana's economy is moving in the right direction, and growing stronger every day," Edwards campaign manager Richard Carbo said."But don't take Gov. Edwards's word for it. The White House agrees."
