John Bowie guilty of murdering wife Roxlyn, 40 years after her disappearance | _SarahMcPhee

AAP, Supplied

The Crown alleged Bowie caused Roxlyn’s death by a deliberate act or acts with an intention to kill, and then disposed of her body in a way that has eluded detection, possibly by feeding her to pigs at the nearby kangaroo meatworks or in a bone pit of kangaroo carcasses that was regularly torched. Bowie’s motive was said to be his “rapidly deteriorating” marriage and desire to pursue a serious, unfettered relationship with another woman, Gail Clarke, who he had met as she holidayed on the banks of the Barwon River in May 1982.

In summing up the wholly circumstantial case, Justice Dina Yehia directed the jury on the availability of manslaughter as an alternative charge to murder. The jury deliberated for less than a day before returning a verdict on Monday afternoon, finding Bowie guilty of murder.
