Moore grew up on a cattle station before establishing his own brokerage firm, John Moore and Company, which eventually became the leading trader in Queensland. He joined the Liberal Party in 1964 and was elected to federal Parliament as the Member for Ryan in 1975. His political journey saw him rise through the ranks, serving as Shadow Minister under Andrew Peacock, John Howard, and Alexander Downer. Prime Minister Howard appointed Mr. Moore as Minister for Industry, Science, and Tourism, where he played a key role in modernizing Australia's car and pharmaceutical industries. In 1998, he became Minister for Defence, overseeing the Australian-led UN peacekeeping mission in East Timor and initiating the upgrade of the Collins class fleet.
