John Oliver slammed the NFL following a quarterback’s recent high-profile concussion scare.
of cheerleaders. On Sunday’s episode, Oliver flat-out declared that football “maybe shouldn’t exist” as a sport.
“There is already primetime programming where people kill themselves for our entertainment—it’s called,” Oliver said as a lead-in to a segment on crime reporting. “Happy concussion season, football fans! It sure feels like this sport maybe shouldn’t exist.” Oliver’s remarks came amidst reform of the NFL’s concussion protocol. During a September 25 game, Miami Dolphins quarterbacksustained an injury after being hit and appeared to stumble when walking off the field. He was later said to have suffered a back injury and was allowed to return to the game during its second half. Four days later, Tagovailoa exhibited symptoms of a concussion after another tackle on the field.
“We do not believe this was a meaningful application of the protocols,” NFL Players Association president and former Cleveland Browns playerSaturday. “Nobody, including the NFL, believes he should have been put back in the game. It is problematic that he was cleared for a back injury for which the lead doctors never took the time to examine.”
The NFL and NFL Players Association have since stated that “while the step-by-step process outlined in the Concussion Protocol was followed, the outcome, in this case, was not what was intended when the Protocol was drafted,” in response to Tagovailoa’s injuries. Beginning this Sunday, “ataxia” or “abnormality of balance/stability, motor coordination dysfunctional speech caused by neurological issue” will be applied to the list of “no-go” symptoms within the concussion protocols.
