Jon Johnson AUBURN – The marching band played in the dark during a pretty cool halftime light show and then Auburn’s offense played as if it was still in the dark during a 28-21 loss to Ole Miss on Saturday night.
The fact the score was tied 14-14 at halftime and stayed that way until the final play of the third quarter is a testament of how hard the team played, because this offense will rank among the worst I’ve ever witnessed in many years of watching Auburn football. Oh Geriner did get one shot late in the third quarter when he lined up as a receiver, got a pass from Thorne behind the line of scrimmage on a trick play in which Geriner was to throw. Instead, he was nailed for a 9-yard loss.
Auburn even trotted 12 players on the field on offense during one play early in the fourth quarter as flags flew. I’m not sure the extra body would have made a difference. Only a strong effort by the Auburn defense kept it close. A unit which was humiliated a week ago at LSU played its guts out against Ole Miss and showed it is capable of holding its own against big-time competition.
But when push came to shove in the second half, Rebel QB Jaxson Dart had some bright moments running and passing and tailback Quinshon Judkins, who Auburn’s previous staff ignored while he starred at Pike Road, pitched in nicely to help the Rebs grind out a victory in a hostile environment. Judkins rushed for 124 yards and ran in the final tally for the Rebels midway through the fourth quarter for a happy homecoming back in the state.
