A Johnson County English teacher is Indiana’s 2024 Teacher of the Year, the state Department of Education announced Monday.
The other two finalists included Valparaiso High English teacher Matt Thomas and Brandon Denning, a mathematics teacher at Indianapolis Public Schools’ Center for Inquiry 84.
Now in his 13th year of teaching, Jenkins began his career at the American Christian Academy in Ibadan, Nigeria in 2007, and moved back to the U.S. in 2008 to teach in Trussville, Alabama. The Indiana native returned in 2013 and began teaching at Franklin Community, south of Indianapolis.As Indiana Teacher of the Year, Jenkins will work to help elevate the teaching profession in Indiana, as well as represent Hoosier teachers at the national level.
For 27 years, Thomas has taught middle and high school students and is a two-time recipient of the Northwest Indiana Teacher of Excellence Award. He serves as an instructional coach to other teachers at VHS.
