Jose Ramirez is getting a new spot in the lineup for the first time this season.
Gimenez moved into the No. 2 spot in the lineup following the Rosario trade. He hit .258 , but Francona didn’t like having two left-handed hitters at the top of the lineup in Kwan and Gimenez. The switch-hitting Ramirez will break them up.Kwan .302 with three homers and 13 RBI.Ramirez is hitting .156 in 10 games in August. But pitchers have been careful with him all season. He has been intentionally walked 15 times. Shohei Ohtani is the only player in the big leagues with more free passes at 16.
Seven of Ramirez’s intentional walks have come in extra innings. When you’re the focal point of one of lowest scoring offenses in the big leagues, no team is going to let you beat them if they can avoid it. Francona usually doesn’t make these kind of move without giving it a lot of thought. Will he keep Ramirez in the No. 2 spot even when Naylor returns? Or will he move him back to No. 3 again?Ramirez in his career is a .286 hitter with 146 homers and 464 RBI in the No. 3 spot. In the No. 2 spot, he’s a career .251 hitter with 14 homers and 55 RBI in 129 games.
