José Urquidy does not deserve sole blame for the loss. Houston’s bats disappeared...

Oakland Athletics' Tony Kemp steals second base as Houston Astros shortstop David Hensley jumps to avoid him during the ninth inning of a baseball game Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Houston. No Astros starter receives more run support than José Urquidy, the strike-throwing righthander who works at a breakneck pace in hopes of getting his offense back into the dugout. Houston has rewarded him with an average of 6.56 runs across his first 26 starts of the season.

Handed four runs of support and a three-run lead after the first inning, Urquidy could not contain one of baseball’s most miserable lineups. He surrendered six earned runs and authored a second straight subpar start during the Astros’ 8-5 loss against the A’s, putting in peril his place in a postseason rotation.Urquidy has allowed 17 hits and 12 earned runs across his past 11 innings. Saturday’s showing raised his ERA to 3.

Urquidy missed few bats and fell victim to the longball. Oakland took 49 swings against him and whiffed just 10 times. They spoiled 20 pitches foul and struck two home runs — the final a three-run bomb from Seth Brown to give Oakland a lead it didn’t relinquish.
