Former Padres General Manager Josh Byrnes playing with a much bigger war chest in the Dodgers' front office than he did when he held same job with Padres
Josh Byrnes’ first opening day payroll as the general manager in San Diego began with a five and ranked 28in the majors. The next year began with a six and the year after that with a nine, but the checkbook Byrnes was opening at Petco Park never ranked above than the bottom third in the majors. Then again, there’s a lot of fun to be had playing with the biggest war chest in the game, too.
Yet for all their ability to spend, they’ve handed out $100 million deals just three times under this regime: Mookie Betts , Freddie Freeman and the since-suspended Trevor Bauer .“The challenge is to try to get to October every year,” Byrnes said Tuesday on the field at Dodger Stadium before Game 1 of the NLDS.
The Max Scherzer-Trea Turner trade was the option last year. The emergence of Tony Gonsolin developing into a front-line starter was the early option when Walker Buehler’s elbow failed him. With Clayton Kershaw on the back nine of his career, homegrown Julio Urias has emerged as a new No. 1.
