Joshua Buatsi once spurned Floyd Mayweather's coaching offer and now looks world-title ready ahead of crucial fight
Joshua Buatsi turned down Floyd Mayweather to sign with Anthony Joshua’s management company and now trains with Virgil HunterJoshua Buatsi has the chance to carve his way to a light-heavyweight title shot this weekend when he takes on Craig Richards in a high-level domestic showdown at the O2.
Instead, he opted to link up with a fellow Brit who has reached the pinnacle – signing to Anthony Joshua’s 258 Management team. “I’m happy where I am with them. In that aspect, Joshua has put a team together that manages us. My relationship with Josh [AJ], it’s like a phone call. ‘Bro, this is the situation that I’m in. What would you do? What do you think about it?’
“Nothing came of it,” Buatsi said ESPN of the conversation with Mayweather. “They rang me two weeks after the Olympics and I said I needed to go back to university and finish my degree, and that’s where it got left. They never got back to me and I wasn’t going to chase it. A move to America to train with Virgil Hunter after beating Marko Calic in 2020 has once again accelerated his hopes of becoming a world champion.Buatsi won bronze at the 2016 Olympics, but wants to top this achievement with a professional world title“That fight made me think of certain things and I think the U.S. move was good for me. I’m enjoying it and I’m confident that on May 21 we’ll see bits of what I’ve been learning.
“I missed the top prize at the Olympics and turning professional is all about becoming world champion,” he said.
