A sequel to the Joy Luck Club is in development nearly 30 years after the original movie hit theaters. Much of the original cast is in talks to return for the follow-up to the Amy Tan adaptation.
Thirty years after its original release, the iconic Asian-American film The Joy Luck Club now has a sequel in development. The Joy Luck Club began its life in 1989 as a novel written by The Kitchen God's Wife author Amy Tan. The story, which is a series of short vignettes, followed the titular Joy Luck Club, a group of four Chinese-American families who play mahjong and trade stories about growing up in immigrant households.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Joy Luck Club was helmed by Maid in Manhattan director Wayne Wang from a screenplay by Tan and Rain Man screenwriter Ronald Bass. The film garnered a positive response, currently holding an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and made back about triple its $10.5 million budget with a box office gross of $32.9 million.
Who Could Return for Joy Luck Club 2? The older main cast members of the original film are still alive, including 95-year-old Lu who appeared as the matriarch grandmother of the Young family in Crazy Rich Asians. In fact, Chin even recently reunited with Wen for an appearance on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2018. However, Nuyen, who holds a second career as a psychological counselor, hasn't acted since 2008.
All four of the younger members of The Joy Luck Club are still working as well. It seems highly likely that, if more than one of them signs on, they would all agree to reunite to bring the sequel to life. However, schedules may prove tricky, especially if Wen ends up committed to another series in the Star Wars universe. Hopefully most, if not all, of the original cast will return to bring the first film full circle and tell another story that began with Tan's original novel.
