Joyleen Butler had to travel around 2,000 kilometres to keep a promise to her late mother and finish high school. Now she's inspiring others from her remote community.
Joyleen Butler is the first person from her remote community of Kaltukatjara to graduate high school in a decade.
"I told my sister I just wanted to stay at home, but she supported me and kept on encouraging me to go to school.Ms Butler said while she was glad to return to her community, there were many boarding school experiences she cherished.Ms Butler was able to study at the Clontarf Aboriginal College in Perth for two years through the NPY Women's Council's boarding school program.
"I was so excited when I heard that she was just about to graduate, and was just amazed, so proud of what she's done.NPY Women's Council youth worker Tameka McMasters says other young people now want to follow Joyleen's example.
