People living at Extend- A- Suites in Mobile says they were told Tuesday morning they had to move out in less than 48 hours. And no more money to pay for another place to stay. Multiple residents say they were given notices in the last week from the front office saying they had to get caught up on rent or be evicted. One man showed us he paid $500 on Sunday to stay for the next two weeks. Another woman says she just paid $750 to stay in a roach-infested room that has no hot water.
"They knew that this was coming. They knew. They told no one. They kept collecting money," said Wells. "Many of these people have been living there literally for years. And so what's occurred is, is they're in a big bind, and we don't think it's fair to them because they don't have enough time to move. But also legally, we don't think they've been given due process," said Casey.
The City of Mobile has since been working with local service providers like Housing First to notify residents and provide information about other places they could stay or services they may qualify for. Notice was given to the current residents earlier this week, but the city does not intend to enforce a padlock order without ensuring that all the residents have somewhere to go.
