Barry Lee Whelpley, charged with the July 1972 murder of a 15-year-old Naperville girl, will be detained in jail until his case goes to trial, a Will County judge ruled Tuesday.
Barry Lee Whelpley, the 78-year-old man charged with the murder of a 15-year-old Naperville girl more than 50 years ago, will remain in jail until his case is resolved in court, a Will County judge ruled Tuesday. Whelpley was arrested in Minnesota in 2021 after DNA evidence allegedly linked him to the murder of Julie Ann Hanson, who disappeared while riding her bicycle on July 7, 1972. He was charged with first-degree murder and has been held in the Will County jail in lieu of $10 million bail.
The Naperville girl he’s accused of killing was brutally stabbed more than 35 times and there’s evidence of an attempted sexual assault, Koch said. DNA evidence recovered from her body matches that of Whelpley, he said. Multiple police reports from the 1970s and 1980s show Whelpley was violent to two previous wives, with reports filed by both women alleging Whelpley threatened their lives and those of their children and their new boyfriends, Koch said.
