Image-based abuse is a growing problem among Australian teenagers, but experts and victims say the support on offer for young people needs to be improved.

A teenager was "punished" by her school and blocked from running for school captain after her ex-boyfriend shared her intimate images with their classmates.

Anna soon learned that her ex-boyfriend had sent intimate photos of her to his friends after she dumped him. Her images were being shared among the boys at her school and had reached students at another school too. Anna says she felt a lot of pressure and eventually caved in. Then after receiving the first photo, Jason kept asking for more."Were they worthy … to be seen by me?"

"They said a parent had rung the school and said I had been 'distributing nude images', as if I had been going around texting them to people unsolicited or something," she said. Imagine opening social media only to be greeted with an intimate photo of yourself you didn't know existed. A growing number of teenagers, most of them young women, don't have to imagine.

"I knew nobody was going to testify … 'Snitches get stitches', that's the expression they use," he said.
