The competition, which has been going since 2015, offers a place for nature photographers to show off the amusing snapshots they've captured while documenting the natural world.

A photo of a red squirrel seemingly stuck in a tree has taken out the top prize in this year's Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards.

More than 9,000 entries were submitted to judges this year, the largest number of photos ever entered in the contest. "I have taken many, many photographs of squirrels, in many situations over the years in Italy," Marchetti said.
