For the first time, the billionaire philanthropist has spoken about the divisions that erupted inside her journalism institute over the creation of a “Nobel Prize”.

has broken her silence on the ruckus inside her journalism institute, citing audacious plans to create an Australian “Nobel Prize” in her name as the reason for her falling out with its management.

Mr Ryan, a former adviser to Paul Keating, and Mr Teperson have since left the institute. Both men have advised the Lowy family, and Mr Teperson was a former director of their company Westfield. He also resigned from Ms Neilson’s family office. To develop the proposal, members of the Judith Neilson Institute appeared to conduct interviews with a range of prominent Australians in the business and scientific community.

It suggested giving out three awards in the first year, costing the institute $4.3 million. One option was for the awards to grow to the size of the prestigious US-based MacArthur Fellows Program, which awards more than a dozen cash prizes or “genius grants” a year.In year ten of the program, Ms Neilson’s prize could be awarded to 18 recipients costing the philanthropist almost $25 million a year, according to the presentation.

She declined, expressing particular dislike for a new logo which was also developed without her knowledge.
