Fans love curmudgeonly Alan Grant, but when Jurassic Park was adapted from a book into a movie he was very different, and one change saved the film.
When Michael Crichton's bestseller was adapted into Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park, one big change to Alan Grant's character made the movie even better. In the novel as in the film, revered paleontologist Dr. Grant is hired alongside paleobotanist Ellie Sattler and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm by John Hammond to ensure that his dinosaur theme park is ready to open.
Dr. Grant Loves Kids In The Jurassic Park Book In Crichton's novel, Dr. Grant loves kids, which, if left in the movie would have drastically changed its tone. Not only would it alter Grant's interactions with Sattler, with whom he has a romantic relationship and may someday want to have a family, but it would also make his interactions with Lex and Tim a lot more benign.
